I grew up in what you would think would be a small town. New London, CT has a population of only about 27,000 people, but we’re crammed into only 5.5 square miles. It’s a pretty urban area for such a small slice of land. North to south, you could easily walk the distance of the whole city in less than two hours. At the southern tip you could walk from the border with Waterford to the shore of the Thames river in ten minutes. We’re like the downtown for all the surrounding cities. And I really miss the place. My parents moved here when I was a year old and I have spent the majority of my life living in New London.
We thought that our little town was hot shit when we were in high school. We had the best football team, the best marching band… we were the only town for miles around with anything resembling a music scene. In our little corner of Connecticut, New London was the coolest place around.
I thought this too. I thought it up until my freshman year when the band took part in an exchange program with a high school band from Quincy, Mass. The sheer size of the band, the quality of their equipment, the size of their practice room was shocking compared to ours. They spent their free time in Boston. We suddenly felt very much less urbane and less cool.
But it was a great time, a great experience. The kid who stayed with us was very cool. Duran Duran hair, suit jacket with the sleeves rolled up, paired with his jeans and Chuck’s. Went to the local spots to see the Cars play. He took my bed while I slept on the couch. We lived a couple hundred feet from the Amtrak line which took him the better part of the week to get used to. He and all the other kids were bored off their ass in our suddenly very little town. When it came time to change places we were just blown away. They had so much to do any time they wanted. Boston was a quick subway ride away and there is just so much to do and see. I can see why Eugene O’Neill (our most famous native son) called New London “a big one-horse town.”
If any of these nine fine, upstanding individuals ever came to my fair city as part of an exchange program I’d happily give up my bed for the couch and do my best to keep them entertained. These are my Tumblr Crushes:
